Hello everyone,

This is a new category for the blog called “DESIGN IN PROGRESS“.  Instead of waiting months for construction to be completed and new furniture to arrive in order to post the final pretty pictures (don’t worry, I will still do that),  I have decided to share every stage of a project with you.  You will see floor plans come to life, and share in the design process with me.  You will see progress pictures and design selections along the way and I will share tips for helping you with your renovation.   So here goes…

PS – Look for T&T (Tips & Tricks) at the bottom of the post.

LET’S START WITH THE KITCHEN!

So excited to start this new extensive renovation project.  We have taken this house down to the studs, moved some walls and built a master suite addition,  and I am the lucky designer that gets to put it all back together.

Today I am going to talk to you about the kitchen, one of the most important rooms in your home..  The process of kitchen design is all about, customizing to your needs.   Are you a baker who needs special cabinets to hold all of your cookie tins? Do you need custom spice racks, an extra sink or a large pull out drawer for big pots?     Take some time to think about what is important to you and your family when you spend time in the kitchen.     In this kitchen, storage was an important aspect of the design, this client also wanted a built in pantry that was part of the kitchen and easily accessible.  We added a beautiful wrap around bench to the space for a comfy rest while cooking Christmas dinner.    A wonderful design with soft white perimeter cabinets, a dark wood island and a beautiful quartz countertop.  We also found some great pendants for over the island (I’ll cover light fixtures in another post).   All that combined with some shiny chrome handles and a beautiful kitchen is created.

Here are some of our pretty selections for the kitchen.  The top left is the main kitchen cabinet colour, the darker one below is the island and the pantry cabinets.  The middle is our amazing quartz countertops and we chose some beautiful glass tile for the backsplash.  Add a gorgeous shiny chrome handle and the basics are complete.

Countertops – Caesarstone 4130 Clamshell

Tile – Stone Source  Element, Scallop Mist 12 x 12

These are some initial drawings for the new cabinet layout, we still have a lot of work to do…

This photo is looking straight at the new kitchen, bay window to the left and island will be right in front.  Take a look at the plans above, specifically the top left, you would be standing in front of the island looking in.

This is a right turn from the last photo, the door at the end is the garage, the panty cabinets will run down the right hand wall.  If you look close you can see the cabinet layout drawn on the floor.

T&T (Tips & Tricks)

T&T – Get your contractor to draw the layout of the cabinets on the floor of the kitchen and take a minute to walk through, this will give you a good “feel” of the layout and if it is working for you.

T&T  – Make sure you choose your appliances prior to kitchen drawings as you will need the dimensions for the cabinet design, as well, code requires cabinets to be a certain distance from a gas stove as opposed to an electric one.

T&T – When choosing cabinet hardware, make sure you hold the handle up against a wall or cabinet to see if there is a comfortable amount of  room for your hand to operate the pull.
